Soriya Reads is a blog dedicating to books read and reviewed by me, Soriya. My reads are various in genre, but recently I’ve been focusing on literature written about people of color by writers of color. Through this blog I hope to add my two cents to the much needed spread and discussion of these types of works. As a person of color myself I’ve been longing for a revolution like this. It’s only makes sense to make a blog about it!
I’m Soriya and I’ve been reading almost all my life. It was an activity supported by my parents, and it’s how I learned English growing up. As a child our main language was Khmer so I started kindergarten quite confused. Since then I was always reading above my grade by a few levels so, I don’t think it’s a surprise that reading is a huge part of my life. I’m one of the few people I know who still frequent the library as a mid-twenties adult!
Well, as for who I am. I’m a barista with a Bachelor’s Degree in English and while not official (thanks forgetful professors) I have a minor in Japanese Language and Culture. One day, I want to be able to read Japanese novels as smoothly as I do English books. I was born in California, but currently live in Massachusetts. (I don’t like the cold here. I relate to Johnny Tsunami, if you haven’t seen it please do! It’s a cheesy 00s movie!) I don’t have any pets, but if you follow me on instagram all I can ever talk about are cats and dogs. I love tea, not fruit teas, they go well with books, especially in winter.
My dream life is to wake up to a good breakfast, my cat and dog, a good books, and comfy socks. If that doesn’t scream “normal” I don’t know what else does! I’m quirky, but nothing too strange. Despite the length of the about me I’m a quiet person and don’t talk unless I have something serious I have to say or to crack a joke. The kind that you have to laugh at even when it’s not funny: puns. There’s no in-between.
I hope you’ll stick around and have a chat with me. Cheers!
